About South Miami



The city of South Miami is in Miami-Dade County, with boundaries from SW 56 Street to the north, North South-Miami Drive to the south, Red Road to the east, and SW 87 Avenue to the west. Its irregular boundaries also include a portion from Sunset Drive (SW 72 Street) to North South-Miami Drive (SW 88 Street), and east to Biscayne Bay.

Incorporated in 1927, South Miami is approximately three square miles within Miami-Dade County and borders the Coral Gables and Pinecrest neighborhoods.

South Miami is a residential neighborhood with a variety of apartments, condos, townhomes, and luxurious properties. It is lush in vegetation and has several parks, a vibrant Downtown area at the intersection of Red Road and Sunset Drive, numerous restaurants, and unique shops. It is a great place to live, dine, work, and visit. It’s no wonder this city with its hometown ambiance is called “The City of Pleasant Living”.

South Miami is situated just three miles south of Downtown Miami, and the American Airlines Arena, home of The Miami Heat. The Miami Metrorail offers an easy commute from the South Miami Station. Metrobus service is also available throughout South Miami to the adjoining neighborhoods of Miami. The Miami International Airport is about a 15-minute drive, and there are major roadways nearby to lead you to other areas of Miami, such as South Beach, Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, Bal Harbour, Aventura, and north into Broward County.

The city of South Miami is served by two hospitals, South Miami Hospital and Larkin Community Hospital. South Miami Hospital, opened in 1960, licensed for 467 beds, is part of the Baptist Health network, and enjoys an excellent reputation for the quality of care and services they provide. The mission of Larkin Community Hospital is to serve the medical needs of the community.

There are ten parks throughout the South Miami neighborhood, all open from dawn to dusk.

  • Dante Fascell Park offers tennis (6 clay courts), handball, volleyball, a tot lot.
  • Palmer Park has softball, baseball, football/soccer fields.
  • South Miami Park has flag football/soccer fields and basketball courts.
  • Brewer Park offers tennis, handball, basketball courts, and a picnic area.
  • Murray Park has basketball courts, T-ball, soccer, and football fields, and a playground area.
  • Fuchs Park is a beautiful, natural area with a pond, to watch a variety of wildlife, especially the native birds and ducks. It also has a pro beach volleyball court and a playground.
  • Marshall Williamson Park has two tennis courts and a playground for tots.
  • Jean Willis (Flowering Tree) Park is a natural area with native plants and flowering trees, a gazebo, and picnic benches.
  • All American Park is a natural area with native plants and trees.
  • Van Smith Park is a natural preserve of native plants and trees.

The Shops at Sunset Place is the main shopping complex right in the heart of South Miami at Red Road and Sunset Drive. It offers a sensational selection of stores and entertainment, including AMC Sunset Place 24-screen cinema with an IMAX theatre, Splitsville luxury bowling lanes and dinner lounge, and GameWorks. The variety of retail stores is extensive, such as Victoria’s Secret, Z Gallerie, Pottery Barn, The Disney Store, Gap, Armani Exchange, Banana Republic, Claire’s Accessories, Barnes & Noble, Bath & Body Works, Hollister Co., Ann Taylor Loft, Urban Outfitters, and American Eagle Outfitters, just to name a few.

There are many restaurants and eateries in and around Sunset Place, including Johnny Rockets, Dan Marino’s Town Tavern, Marhaba Restaurant, Panera Bread, Town Kitchen & Bar, Shula’s 347 Grill, various pizza restaurants, and several ice cream shops.

In addition, outside the complex lining both sides of Sunset Drive between US1 and Red Road are unique boutiques, specialty stores, and restaurants serving a wide range of cuisines from Sushi to Mexican at Qdoba, and the elegant Italian cuisine at Trattoria Sole. A very casual atmosphere for early breakfast, lunch or dinner is at the ever popular Deli Lane Cafe, which was the first restaurant in South Miami offering al fresco dining. The adjoining Sunset Tavern, with a sports bar and pool table, is a favorite hangout for the students and faculty of the University of Miami, the staff of nearby South Miami Hospital, and a regular meeting place for local professionals and friends. The Irish Times pub and eatery serves a traditional Irish breakfast all day, along with other popular menu items such as Irish burgers, sandwiches, appetizers, soups, and salads.

From Sunset Drive heading south on Red Road among a strip of shops is the small and cozy Café Pastis, a funky bistro with French cuisine from Provence, and the charming ambiance of a neighborhood café in Paris. Always leave room for a homemade dessert to end a truly authentic country French dining experience.

A couple of stores down is Mojito Grill, which offers a great Cuban menu of all the popular favorites, and a great way to start your day is with their Mojito “Special” Breakfast.

Heading west on SW 73 Street, is another collection of restaurants, Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill, RA Sushi, Casa Larios Cuban cuisine, Khoury’s Mediterranean, and New Chinatown, serving a fresh and healthy Chinese menu.

The Lowe Art Museum is off US1 directly on the University of Miami campus on Stanford Drive. With the gift in 1950 by philanthropists Joe and Emily Lowe, a free-standing museum facility opened to the public in 1952, the first art museum in South Florida. Its permanent 17,500–object collection is one of the most important in the southeast, with strengths in Renaissance, Baroque, American, Ancient and Native American, and Asian art.

South Miami has two major supermarkets in the area, Publix and Winn-Dixie, and for a more gourmet selection, there is Gardner’s Market just below Sunset Drive on Red Road, and heading two blocks north on Red Road is Whole Foods Market, selling top quality natural and organic products.

The Tropical Audubon Society, established in 1947, is a non-profit organization and a chapter of both the Audubon of Florida and the National Audubon Society. The Doc Thomas House, which is the headquarters, is a Dade County historic site covering three sub-tropical acres of native habitat in the heart of South Miami, a block east of Red Road on Sunset Drive. Their purpose is conservation of native plants and animals in their habitats, education of the public on nature and the environment, and enjoyment of studying together and protecting nature.
