Palmetto Bay Neighborhood Overview

About Palmetto Bay

Directly south of Pinecrest is the neighborhood of Palmetto Bay. Its boundaries are SW 136 Street to the north, SW 184 Street to the south, Biscayne Bay on the east, and US1 on the west. Incorporated in 2002, Palmetto Bay became Miami-Dade’s 33rd municipality.

Palmetto Bay is a family-oriented community, right on Biscayne Bay, and easily accessible to all the conveniences of the nearby neighborhoods of Pinecrest and those just west of US1.

The Village of Palmetto Bay is home to excellent public schools, all of which have annually earned the grade A under the State of Florida’s A+ Plan, and exceptional private schools.

Coral Reef Park is in the heart of Palmetto Bay, covering more than 50 acres, and the perfect location for walking, reading, relaxing, picnicking, playing, jogging, biking, softball, football, beach volleyball, and tennis. There is also a covered playground and a meditation gazebo and garden.

Palmetto Bay Park is a 25-acre facility, featuring a skate pavilion, basketball courts, the largest boundless playground in South Florida, and a state-of-the-art six-field softball complex.

Thalatta Park is about four acres of green areas with direct access to Biscayne Bay. The northeast portion of the property is home to herons, pelicans, marine iguanas, and other wildlife known to reside in mangroves. The site houses a beautiful two-story vintage residence designed and built by the Connett family, who named it "Thalatta", a Latin variation on the Greek word "thalassa" meaning "the sea." In 2007, the Village Council honored the original name by naming the property "Thalatta Park." The structure represents a modest interpretation of the Mediterranean-Revival style, similar to that of the historic Charles Deering Estate located directly to the north.

The Deering Estate at Cutler is a 444-acre historical preserve along the edge of Biscayne Bay comprised of two houses – the Stone House and Richmond Cottage. It is a cultural, educational facility with activities including canoe tours, butterfly walks, nature hikes, jazz concerts, archeological lectures, and the venue for many community interests, and social functions.

In 2006, the Village of Palmetto Bay launched their own intra-Village bus service which links to the schedule of the Miami-Dade Transit routes. The blue and white buses called “IBUS” features the native bird, the ibis, which frequents the neighborhood and parks. A short drive away, heading west on SW 152 Street is another major attraction for tourists and locals – Metro Zoo, with over 100 exhibits on 740 acres, and 2,000 animals on display in their habitats.

Built in 1959, the Palmetto Golf Course is a 18-hole Championship course on 121 acres designed by Dick Wilson, running alongside US1 on the west side at SW 152 Street.
