Loosely situated west of US1 and extending as far out as the Everglades is the community known as Kendall. Its main roadway, Kendall Drive, is named after Henry John Boughton Kendall, a trustee of the Florida Land and Mortgage Company that purchased a vast area of Kendall in 1883. The Metrorail elevated rapid transit system ends at the Dadeland South Station, with direct access to One Datran Center. Host to Sabadell United Bank, Wachovia-Wells Fargo, BNY Mellon, BB&T and other banks within a 1 mile radius, this quickly earned the nickname Dadeland Financial Center.
Dadeland Mall, perhaps one of Miami’s most iconic shopping malls, hosts over 185 retail shops including such flagship stores as Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom, Macys, JC Penney, The Limited and Express. Owned and operated by the Simon property, it also hosts Cheesecake Factory and Villagio restaurants.
In 2004, beginning with Gulfside Development and their vision for a condominium community named Downtown Dadeland, a condo construction boom exploded in the triangularly shaped geographical area between US1, Kendall Drive and the Palmetto Expressway. Gulfside wanted to create the concept of “A Village within a City” where residents would have access to everything they needed within walking distance. Since Downtown Dadeland broke ground for construction in 2004, other developers who saw the potential in the area decided to join in, and within 3-4 year’s time Toscano Condominums and Metropolis I and Metropolis II were completed. All of the residential condo projects followed suit to Downtown Dadeland and included 1st floor retail space in each building. By 2008, TownCenter One was completed and offered class “A” office condos to complement the new residential space.
Kendall is also host to Baptist Hospital and Miami Dade College Kendall campus.
